Talvar (2015)

Talwar review.

written by Souranath Banerjee

A superbly well researched fictional representation.

My Ratings: 4.1/5.

The Noida double murder case (Noida, Uttar Pradesh) also known as the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case was all over the papers in 2008 (exact date of the tragedy 15-16 May).

14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead (her throat slit) and the maid servant Hemraj was the prime suspect (since he was missing).

One day later, Hemraj’s partially decomposed body (throat slit) was discovered on the terrace of the Talwar’s residence.

Talvar-Poster2The case attracted extreme level of press attention and public curiosity since it was like a live whodunit film with numerous plot-twists, and steadily being revealed through the daily ruthless media updates.

Soon the police accused Aarushi’s parents Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar for both the murders openly in the media and termed the murders as a case of honour killings

But then, without much satisfactory results the case got transferred to the CBI.

Finally in 2015, the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case is actually been made into a whodunit film but fortunately it seems that Vishal Bhardwaj (writer) and Meghna Gulzar (director) have done their research very well and the film Talwar reflects a more or less unbiased overview of the tragic case.

A tight script that makes you involved right from the start.

With terrific performances by actors like Irrfan Khan (as CBI investigating officer), Konkona Sen Sharma (as Nupur Talwar), Neeraj Kabi (as Rajesh Talwar) and Gajraj Rao (police officer), Talvar-Posterthe film Talwar narrates such a gripping tale that it’s often difficult for the audience to remember that after all it’s a fictional representation of the dismal crime and its aftermath.

Talwar also reminds us of the uncomfortable reality about the ignorance and inefficiency of the Indian police force (specially in the small towns); probably the same reason why we unconsciously enjoy our Singhams and Dabanggs so much.

And then the official politics in the CBI like any other bureaucracy; the contamination of evidence, the sudden change in the statements of the witness and the utter lack of motivation to seek the truth.

There is no end of controversies involving this particular case and till date people are fighting for justice or may be against injustice.

As the latest Bollywood trend continues and more films are made on real events/tragedies, we the audience can’t help but convince ourselves time and again that indeed reality can be stranger than fiction!
A film that is definitely worth your time.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)

My Ratings: 3.9/5.

Sometimes in the anticipation of fulfilling our expectations we seem to surrender ourselves to a particular art form even before we have truly experienced it.

For me in this case, being a huge fan of both Byomkesh Bakshy (detective) and Dibakar Banerjee (director), i realized that even before watching the film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! i somehow knew that this would be a cinema of superlative excellence.

But then again such emotional pre-asumptions could be dangerous.

detective-byomkesh-bakshy-poster1Well, i surely won’t go that far by saying that Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! failed to live up to my expectations but i have to admit that the climax and specially the post-climax melodrama could have been handled better.

But first things first, this is THE best, most-detailed and flawless period film i have ever seen!

Thanks to awesome production designing by Vandana Kataria and superb Vfx by Prana Studios.

From the unique Kolkata trams to the Life magazine displayed in a bookshop, from the logo in tea cup to the hoardings and advertisements in the streets, the color/texture of the buildings, the typical style of wearing dhotis and sarees, the cars and their number plates, even the make of a revolver – all takes you back to an era that we have only read but never seen before.

Nostalgic Kolkata in the early 40s – a city traumatized by the World-War II, ripped and torn apart by the internal power struggle for freedom from the British Raj.

And in such turbulent times, in the midst of outraged freedom fighters and violent Japanese opium smugglers, a young man seems to be investigating a peculiar case of a chemist’s disappearance.

Detective_Byomkesh_Bakshi_poster4Dibakar Banerjee chooses to portray Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay‘s famous fictional sleuth as an inexperienced, just-out-of-college, curious, restless, impulsive youth – Byomkesh Bakshy, the legendary detective in the making.

And Sushant Singh Rajput does a great job, he is absolutely sure of what is wanted from him and delivers spot on. Even the other actors Anand Tiwari (as Watson), and then Neeraj KabiSwastika MukherjeeDivya Menon all have given their best.

Cool background score by Sneha Khanwalkar and great frames captured by Dibakar’s favorite cinematographer Nikos Andritsakis.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is no doubt a decent thriller, technically flawless but the overall plot and editing could have been sharper.

A good film that easily had the potential to be a great one.
