Son of Saul (2015)

Son of Saul review

written by Souranath Banerjee

A poetic portrayal of horror – and also of the best in human nature.

My Ratings: 4.3/5.

Won the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film of 2016 (Hungary), won the Golden Globes Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language, won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for Palme d’Or – just a few mentions among the numerous awards and accolades that the film has received yet!

Son of Saul (original title Saul fia) is a film made on the backdrop of Holocaust.

The Holocaust – the most inhuman times in the son-of-saul-posterhistory of mankind when under the close watch of Nazi German dictator Adolf Hitler and his associates, a planned genocide took place and about six million people (mostly Jews) were systematically executed over a period of four years!

Over the years many acclaimed films have managed to portray that particular shameful and disastrous period, films such as Schindler’s List (1993) and The Pianist (2002) just to name a couple. But then again, Son of Saul probably for the first time have achieved something unique in its depiction of that dreadful era – it almost recreated reality!

The dark underbelly of a concentration camps, the sheer horror of those routine massacres, the heaps of bodies, the smell of the poisonous gas, and of course the constant fear of death – director László Nemes have made it all come alive.

Son of Saul is entirely based on two consecutive days taken from the life of Saul Auslander a Hungarian prisoner at one of the Auschwitz Crematoriums working as a Sonderkommando (those who were forced to aid with the disposal of gas chamber victims).

son-of-saul-poster1Brilliantly played by debutant Géza Röhrig, it’s about how Saul Auslander risking his own life tries to give a proper Jewish burial to the corpse of a boy whom he takes for his son!

Shot entirely with a 40mm lens, Through many long shots and handheld camera movements, cinematographer Mátyás Erdély made sure that the camera stays with the main character Saul throughout the film for the audience to encounter exactly what Saul experiences!

Stunning recreation of that period by production designer László Rajk; and exceptional sound design by Tamás Zányi – five months to create such a realistic background sound-environment.

Music score by László Melis on the other hand is kept intentionally very subtle.

Only a few rare films makes you use not only your eyes but all the other senses as well; to experience, to suffer, to appreciate, to endure – Son of Saul definitely counts as one of the purest form of Cinema!

Best Jew-Nazi dramas during the Holocaust (10+1list)

Best Jew-Nazi dramas during the Holocaust.

written by Souranath Banerjee

For anybody who is not familiar with the word ‘holocaust‘ (though i doubt that), it is a term used to define the genocide in which approximately six million Jews (including one million Jewish children) were killed by Adolf Hitler through his Nazi regime.

There were another five million non-Jewish victims of Nazi mass murders as well.

And thus, in between1941 to 1945, while Germany was fighting the WorldWar II in the forefront, approximately eleven million people were executed in a preplanned and secretive manner throughout Nazi-Germany and the other German-occupied territories.

Numerous films and documentaries have been made to portray those unpredictable and desperate times.

Interestingly the films listed below neither emphasize on the WWII nor particularly based on the inhumane concentration camp stories; these films tell the tales of those who defied against the barbaric massacre of human lives, of those who challenged the deadly systematic annihilation and survived (or at least tried to).

Most of these films are based on true stories and are definitely the best Jew-Nazi dramas in the times of Holocaust.

Please have a look.

Best Modern Black and White movies (10+1list)

Best Modern Black and White movies

written by Souranath Banerjee.

The transition of Cinema from ‘black and white’ to ‘color’ is a unique evolutionary process that took years of experimentation.

Evidently in Europe (specifically in U.k and France), as early as in the beginning of 1900, the first few colored footage were made; they were mostly hand-colored short films. Then in 1914, in U.K Natural Color Kinematograph Company made the first ever full length feature film in color named The World, the Flesh and the Devil.

In 1918 Cupid Angling was made in US by Douglass Natural Color The-Wizard-of-Oz-posterFilm Inc. which is the first American ‘colored’ feature. Then of course The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Gone with the Wind (1939) established the era of colorful films.

Eventually the dominance of ‘black and white’ films faded away and cinema was full of colors! By the late 60s only a handful of black and white films are made each year.

Nowadays the black and white medium is regarded as a rare artistic choice for stylized visuals, or specifically used to portray a certain desired mood/emotion.

And now, the list contains some of the Best Modern Black and White movies. Enjoy!

A walk among the Tombstones (2014)

My Ratings: 2.5/5.

There areA million ways to die in the west but probably the worst kind is to get kidnapped by a couple of psychos, get tortured and then sliced up into pieces.

A prayer for the dying but that’s not enough. The Mission here is to catch these Unknown kidnappers who are repeatedly Crossing the line, are in a Non-stop rampage murdering The innocent clueless victims.

The only Satisfaction for the Husbands and Wives or anybody Next to kin to the victims is to make sure that the Suspects responsible for such gruesome deeds are Nailed by the law (or may be an out of the law settlement is even better).

And here comes the not so Gun shy detective, ex-cop Matt/Matthew Scudder who is Taken for the job.

An actor who has been a part of the Gangs of New York and The A-Team, have seen both The clash andThe wrath of the Titans; has witnessed times of Batman Begins till The dark night rises.

Yes he is The nut job who has been Rob Roy, Ethan Frome, Michael Collins and Alfred Kinsey; has ticked off his Schindler’s list and is now ready to take A walk among the Tombstones’.

Who else but Liam Neeson.

There are only a few such actors who can make a simple action thriller look super cool. And A walk among the tombstones is worth a watch only for Liam Nesson’s presence and performance.

Directed by Scott Frank, the film builds up enough suspense in the first half to excite the audience, we begin to expect and anticipate but unfortunately in the second half when it comes to wrapping things up neatly (I mean logically) the film goes for a brisk walk somewhere among the tombstones.

At the end even the dangerous psychotic kidnappers seemed to loose their edge.

The deadly evil men who relished butchering innocent girls throughout the film suddenly gets nervous when Matthew Scudder (Liam Nesson) threatens them to hunt them down (that too on the telephone). And soon enough they stupidly agree to reveal themselves!

But I am not going to reveal any further except that the film stretches on for a good half an hour more than it should. The editor also seemed to have gone for a walk among the …

The title sequence is impressive, very well shot and innovative.

So if Liam Nesson and an innovative title sequence can lure you to the cinemas – you are most welcome.
