Best Adult Animation films ever made (20+1list)

Best Adult Animation films ever made

written by Souranath Banerjee

Adult Animation films!?

But aren’t animation supposed to be for kids? Well, the answer is Yes and No!

First of all we have to understand that ‘Animation is not a genre, but an art form.’

Although mostly Animation is been associated with children, them being taken for granted as the perfect target adult-animationaudience, but then, filmmakers most often use the art of animation to tell stories that are highly subversive in nature, tales of immense maturity been told under the guise of a children’s film!

And then, some others make such exquisite pieces of artistic animated Cinema aimed ONLY for the grown ups, the so called adults!

(But don’t get too excited because I am not talking of hentai or any other form of explicit or animated porn at the moment. At least not in this article!)

This particular list contains some of the Best Adult Animation movies that are often very realistic in approach, sometimes they are issue-based (specially wars or political turmoil), others are philosophical, may be allegorical or satirical (based on various metaphors), and obviously a few of them contain decent dozes of violence and sex that are not at all meant for the juniors!

So, here we go!

20. South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut (1999)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbMl6DjhJ1I

Adult-AnimationFour boys, an R-rated movie and of course the war against Canada!

Directed by Trey Parker and writer Matt Stone (who also wrote the original South Park television series), one of the most hilarious comedy but not exactly meant for kids though.

The highest grossing animated film with an R rating till date and also the most mount of profanity used in any animated film ever!

19. It’s Such a Beautiful Day (2012)

Adult-Animation Comprised of three short films released over a period of 2006-2011, all directed and narrated by Don Hertzfeldt.

It’s the story of Bill, his world, his dreams, his revelations; all uniquely animated on paper with stick figures, shot on 35mm camera with experimental optical effects merged with real footages.

Funny yet deep and highly intellectual, undoubtedly the most philosophical animated cinema I have seen till date!

18. Paprika (2006)

Papurika (original title)

Directed by the acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki, a marvellous film dipped in Japanese myth and folklore, with enough blood and violence to make it count in this list.

A few other films from the same director that are more suited for adults than children are The Wind Rises (2013) and Spirited Away (2001).

12. Fritz the Cat (1972)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PADIloikkhg

Adult-AnimationThe first animated film to receive an ‘X’ rating and it opened the gates of the future nuisance that followed!

Directed by renowned Ralph Bakshi, this one is one hell of a comic satire on the 60s NewYork scenario, with a cat being the main centre of attraction/attention.

Funny, comic and full of adult jokes,  an animated sex comedy – easygoing and entertaining as well.

11. Barefoot Gen (1983)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjLYP_X80GA

Adult-AnimationDirected by Mori Masaki, this is a a disturbing tale of a boy from Hiroshima, and how his life changes during the WW2.

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji-LqBskNyE

Adult-AnimationA survival story of a group of rabbits who are always in danger of predators ready to catch them, kill them, eat them – in a sense not very different from our own human world!

Directed by Martin Rosen the film is adopted from the famous novel by Richard Adams by the same name.

And not exactly for the kids, since it is a pretty violent and ruthless film to be animated!

Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, this anime contains extreme sex, nudity and violence that almost pushes it to the Hentai territory.

6. Persepolis (2007)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PXHeKuBzPY

Adult-AnimationDirected by Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi, this is a powerful film that tells the story of an Iranian girl, growing up during the times of Islamic Revolution!

An animated satire, originally based on a comic-book; though the film has a comic touch but overall pretty serious in content, definitely not aimed for kids in mind.

It is a bold biographical journey of co-director Marjane Satrapi.

5Waking Life (2001)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbPgprcMtjo

Adult-AnimationDiscussions regarding the purpose of the existence and the meaning of life can be pretty heavy stuff but this animated feature manages to maintain an overall dreamy psychedelic mood that creates an unique experience for the viewers!

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXQraSkOOGs

Adult-AnimationA retired pop-star who is set to become an actress is stalked by an obsessed fan, but soon things becomes too dangerous to handle.

Adult-AnimationAbused and banished from her village, a woman unknowingly makes a treaty with the devil and  gains magical ability. But soon the devil wants his share!

Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto, a story told metaphorically with highly explicit symbolisms.

A poetic epic, an avant- garde feature of exquisite beauty and certainly the most artistic film I have ever seen!

+1. Sita Sings the Blues (2008)

Hayao Miyazaki – a parallel universe

Hayao Miyazaki – a parallel universe

written by Souranath Banerjee

Generations of kids from around the world are fascinated and enchanted by the ever-popular Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and my-neighbor-totoro-postertheir adorable friends, but I doubt how many youngsters have heard about ‘Porco Rosso‘ ‘Chihiro‘ or ‘Totoro‘!

Have you by any chance met the intelligent ‘Laputian Robots’, or the eerie spirit ‘No Face‘ whose face is literally missing? Have you ever taken a ride in a ‘CatBus‘ or seen the Goldfish Princess ‘Ponyo‘?

Well, there is a whole parallel universe of mesmerizing animation waiting to be explored (if not explored already); the imaginative world of a genius named Hayao Miyazaki.

John Lasseter, the director of Toy StoryA Bug’s Life and Cars, and probably the most successful animator/director/producer in Hollywood says about Miyazaki:

‘I love his films. I study his films. I watch his films when I’m looking for inspiration.’

Hayao Miyazaki won two Academy awards (nominated thrice), one for best animated feature Spirited Away and the other, the Honorary Academy Award for his impact on animation and cinema (the second Japanese filmmaker to get this award after Akira Kurosawa in 1990).

The co-founder of the famous Japanese production house Studio Ghibli (along with master director Isao Takahata), Mr. Miyazaki have the unique ability to tell his stories, though mostly from a children’s perspective but often loaded with hidden messages or allegories to feed the matured minds as well.

Trailer of his film My Neighbor Totoro (1988).

Thus, in a career that spanned for over five decades, his films though always having a fairytale quality are appreciated by all (regardless of their age), through out the world.

In 1997 a film called Princess Mononoke gave Hayao Miyazaki the fame he so rightly deserved. Not only did the film broke all Japanese box office records but since it was distributed by Disney across the world, Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli became instantly recognized in the global animation market.

And then came his most commercially and critically successful film Spirited Away that also won him an Oscar!

There was also Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) and Ponyo (2008) which only confirmed his supremacy as a legendary animation director.

But Mr. Miyazaki with his classic approach towards animation (he The-Wind-Rises-posterstill prefers hand-drawing each frame rather than digitizing) is still media shy and prefers to work peacefully from his own place.

According to him ‘We should possess the wisdom to live in our corner of the world in peace.’

With his last film The Wind Rises (2013) he has officially announced his retirement. He intends to work on the Studio Ghibli Museum, on which he jokingly comments ‘I might even become an exhibit myself’.

Compared with the creative brilliance of Walter Elias Disney (Walt Disney), Hayao Miyazaki is undoubtedly the best animator/director and the greatest Japanese filmmaker of today.

And on this day, Jan 5, his 75th Birthday – let’s wish him health, happiness and a request for a few more magical films (please).

Also do check out the documentary made on Mr. Miyazaki and his studio The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (2013), directed by Mami Sunada.

Best Japanese weird films (10+1list)

Best Japanese weird films

written by Souranath Banerjee

Best Japanese weird films: It’s interesting to notice that the word ‘weird’ actually doesn’t have any specific definition. Even the dictionary tries to explain it by using other synonymic words like uncanny, eerie, unnatural, bizarre, strange, abnormal, surreal, supernatural e.t.c

According to me if you really want to learn the true meaning of ‘weird’, you should watch some of these Japanese films!

Yes. Every country has their share of peculiar films but Japan totally dominates the weird-cinema category. Comedy, violence, Sci Fi, erotica – you name it and Japan has the weirdest film for each and every genre.

Just remember, none of these films are made to please the so-called general audience – so better watch them at your own risk!

And the list begins.

10. Funky Forest: The First Contact (2005)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3wQio3fbqE

Japanese-weird-filmsA comedy to start with but this is no ordinary laugh riot.

Directed by Katsuhito IshiiHajime Ishimine and Shunichiro Miki the film is insanely surreal – probably a satire of Japanese pop-culture.

With no actual plot as such but trust me, if you ever dare to watch this film – storyline will be the last thing on your mind.

9. Battle Royale (2000)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0p1t-dC7Ko

Japanese-weird-filmsDirected by Kinji Fukasaku, this is probably the most innovative film in this list.

A film that first introduced the dystopian arena concept where you have to kill to survive and eventually win. The never ending series of Hunger Games is the most successful american rip off till date.

Extreme violence, school children killing each other in every possible way (if) you can imagine.

8. Branded to Kill (1967)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oou1UmrDlyg

Japanese-weird-filmsA crazy, stylish Japanese film noir!

Directed by Seijun Suzuki, the film is about this hired killer who wants to be No 1 in his profession.

Well, i won’t give away any visual insanity of the film but just to stress the fact – the film was so unconventional and weird that the director’s contract was terminated by the studio after the final edit came out!

7.  A Lonely Cow Weeps at Dawn (2003)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wskcQ_ETr6Q

Japanese-weird-filmsThe most psychologically creepy concept ever.

After the death of his favorite cow an old man believes his daughter-in-law to be that cow and yes – he attempts to milk her on a regular basis.

Directed by Daisuke Gotô, the film contains extreme nudity and sex, often disturbingly spooky and of course weird.

6. Rampo Noir (2005)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYtN_m1V_BE

Japanese-weird-filmsAn anthology film that adapts four short stories by Japan’s foremost mystery writer Edogawa Rampo (the so-called “Japanese Edgar Allen Poe”).

Four films by individual directors Akio JissôjiAtsushi KanekoHisayasu Satô and Suguru Takeuchi – each more horrifying and peculiar than the other.

Beautiful visuals but extremely weird and gory concepts.

5. Survive Style 5+ (2004)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEH7nDkiPEk

Japanese-weird-filmsDirected by Gen Sekiguchi, the film involves five stories each competing for the most-weird award; they apparently doesn’t connect with each other but again, may be they does in some eccentric manner.

Considered as a black comedy, the film is a potent mixture of violence, laughs and colorful visuals.

Very stylish and super cool acting but again odd and quirky as hell.

4. Blind Beast (1969)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG34PFaQJgE

Japanese-weird-filmsOften refereed to as a Japanese art-house classic directed by Yasuzô Masumura

A psychotic blind man, a sculpter by profession becomes obsessed with a model whom he kidnaps and falls in love with.

Such a concept is later used in many other films (even in William Wyler‘s film The Collector) but never with such violent and raw fashion.

3. Suicide Club (2001)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2Rhrp_b5bM

Japanese-weird-filmsGraphic, eerie and spooky as hell.

A number of people are committing suicide all across Japan. A detective is desperate to find out why/what/who/how is this mass suicide is being triggered?

Directed by Shion Sono, the film is not only weird but damn scary, specially the train-sequences (do watch the film to know why).

Also check out Cold Fish (2010) and Love Exposure (2008) from the same director.

2. Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uROMTzJsfOI

Japanese-weird-filmsA black and white nightmare of technology (or rather the fear of it). It’s the story of the strange rebirth of a ‘metal fetishist’ who was supposed to be dead.

Wacky, nerve wrecking, crazy visuals that will be burned into your head for ever.

Directed by Shin’ya Tsukamoto, the film has stretched the limits of being weird to a new level.

  1. Visitor Q (2001)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRc6dN7s1w4

Japanese-weird-filmsAnd now it’s time for the celebrated director Takashi Miike.

Most of his films are so weird that he probably deserves a separate list all together!

This film though takes the cake for being super-disturbing and for it’s total madcap visuals.

Highly sexual in content and often considered as sick and disgusting.

Also check out Gozu (2003), Ichi the Killer (2001) from the same director.

and (The ‘+1′ film is not necessarily the best but certainly the most unique and bizarre one. A must watch).

+1. Cat Soup (2001)

Film trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZOvNuvS1hg

Japanese-weird-filmsConsidered as a masterpiece, this one is a short animated film (duration 34 mins) but more importantly it’s also the weirdest animation film that ever exists.

Directed by Tatsuo Satô, the film is about two cat siblings on a psychedelic journey. And they are in search of a soul.

If you find Hayao Miyazaki‘s films a little weird, please try this one!
