Best Modern Black and White movies (10+1list)

Best Modern Black and White movies

written by Souranath Banerjee.

The transition of Cinema from ‘black and white’ to ‘color’ is a unique evolutionary process that took years of experimentation.

Evidently in Europe (specifically in U.k and France), as early as in the beginning of 1900, the first few colored footage were made; they were mostly hand-colored short films. Then in 1914, in U.K Natural Color Kinematograph Company made the first ever full length feature film in color named The World, the Flesh and the Devil.

In 1918 Cupid Angling was made in US by Douglass Natural Color The-Wizard-of-Oz-posterFilm Inc. which is the first American ‘colored’ feature. Then of course The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Gone with the Wind (1939) established the era of colorful films.

Eventually the dominance of ‘black and white’ films faded away and cinema was full of colors! By the late 60s only a handful of black and white films are made each year.

Nowadays the black and white medium is regarded as a rare artistic choice for stylized visuals, or specifically used to portray a certain desired mood/emotion.

And now, the list contains some of the Best Modern Black and White movies. Enjoy!

Best of Film Noir (Black Cinema)

Best of Film Noir.

Written by Souranath Banerjee.

Around 1946 Nino Frank, a French film critic first coined the term ‘Film Noir’ to define the series of stylized, high contrast black and white American films of that particular era.

Dark shadows, flickering neon signs, cheap urban settings, dingy alleys and backdoors, claustrophobic interiors, cynical looking men (mostly private detectives or street smart hustlers) wearing long overcoats drinking away, treacherous foxy women (femme fatales)  wearing a mask of innocence seducing away, corruption and betrayal, guns and murders, the certainty of unhappy endings and of course lots and lots of cigarettes.

Enter the world of Film Noir (literal meaning ‘Black Cinema‘).

And here is a list of some of the best and most popular Film Noirs Hollywood ever produced.

1. The Maltese Falcon (1941).

Maltese-Falcon-posterThis particular film directed by John Huston (his debut) is said to have started the trend and set the mood for the innumerable Film Noirs that dominated Hollywood for the next two decades.

A perfectly twisted murder mystery.

Humphrey Bogart with his crooked handsome looks and the trademark nasal tone soon became the most popular Film Noir star of that era.

2. Double Indemnity (1944).

11. Touch of Evil (1958)

Film Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-Oqn2hMp1M

touch-of-evil-posterPerformances by Charlton HestonJanet Leigh and Orson Welles – a thriller that is said to be the last of Hollywood’s favorite genre.

Directed by Orson Welles himself, it has kidnapping, corruption, murder and revenge. As the poster says – it is the story of the strangest vengeance that was ever planned!

A true classic to end the golden era of Film Noirs.

Even in the recent past a few films successfully managed to capture the nostalgia of the classic Film Noirs.

A few examples of such Neo-Noirs are The French Connection (1971), Chinatown (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), Blood Simple (1984), L.A.Confidential (1997), Blade Runner (1982), Memento (2000), Mulholland Drive (2001), A History of Violence (2005), Sin City (2005).

Sin City: A Dame to Kill for (2014)

My Ratings: 3/5

Welcome to the twisted world of Sin City.

A city that conspires with the stooping dark shadows to tell its gruesome stories; where white blood spills like milk, men ruthless and bloodthirsty, and the dames cold and treacherous.

Almost after a decade since Sin City (2005) mesmerized us, we are invited again to get drenched in pure artistic savage violence; an invitation I couldn’t resist.

sin-city-poster1The most awaited sequel – Sin City: A dame to kill for has preserved the legacy of Frank Miller’s comic book style imagery, typically high contrast black and white with occasional flashes of red, blue, green and gold.

Perspectives are stretched beyond belief and each frame has a unique story of shadow play.

And that too in 3D! (Though I personally feel the 3D technology doesn’t add much to such already-stylized films).

sin-city-poster2Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez have done it again but this time (though artistically as impressive as the first one) the story doesn’t have that sting in it.

The various interlinked plots that bind the screenplay are somehow deliberately underplayed; I mean as if it is a conscious effort from the filmmakers to keep things as simple as possible almost at the risk of being dumb.

But consistency is maintained in the department of violence. Every now and then throats are getting sliced, skulls smashed, enough chopped hands and heads and at the peak of it – an eye was taken out with bare hands!

sin-city-poster3-marvActors who managed to stay alive in the first movie still dominate the sequel – the brute force Mickey Rourke, seductive dancer Jessica Alba, the protector of the old town Rosario Dawson and the powerful senator Powers Boothe.

Even Bruce Willis makes his presence felt in a few scenes – now only a ghost of himself.

And then there is the sexy Eva Green, chirpy Joseph Gordon Lewitt and Josh Brolin (replacing Clive Owen) – the new lot who promise to commit every possible sin offered by the Sin City.

sin-city-a-dame-to-kill-for-poster-rosario-dawsonThe deadly Miho is also been replaced; Jamie Chung played the role instead of my favorite Devon Aoki.

But nevertheless every Sin City film is an unique experience, an artistic extravaganza, a pure delight for both the action film lovers and comic book enthusiasts.

In this sequel there is a bonus treat for us, none other than the sultry Eva Green and her fight for free-dom with the censor boards (of India).
